We have a little bit of free time now on Friday afternoon, so I thought I’d give you Silk’s testimony. Please pray for her and her family! The picture I’ve included is a photo of Kris and Silk.
Due to the culture and her family situation, Silk and her siblings were sent to a boarding school when she was 4. She was there through 5th grade and learned about Jesus there. She was getting confusing messages, though, because the Headmaster of the school was a Christian and told them of Jesus, but was also very mean so this didn’t give Silk a good picture of what Jesus was really like. During her time at the boarding school, she would pray to God, but would not get any answers. She thought maybe she wasn’t good enough. She knew nothing about Jesus taking our sins away or how to have a relationship with Him. Her grandparents died when she was in 5th grade, so she and her siblings were able to move home then. She was so happy that she could finally be with her family and wanted to be with them forever. Her Dad researched how to read palms and the stars, and he told Silk that she was bad luck. She was shocked and thought that life was unfair. How could she find a way out of this “bad karma”. Buddhism gave her no hope. Who could help her? When Silk became a teenager, a friend of hers told her about Jesus and she accepted Him into her heart. She was so excited and full of peace and joy and couldn’t wait to tell her family.
Well, her parents were not happy at all with her decision and gave her an ultimatum to either choose Jesus or them (her family). She was locked in a closet overnight to tell them her answer in the morning. If she chose Jesus, she would have to leave the house and would no longer be considered their daughter. She prayed and prayed that night that God would change her parent’s hearts. She really wanted to follow Jesus. But, what a difficult choice for a 15 year old! So, in the morning, Silk told her parents she wanted to stay with them and not be a Christian. So, from when she was about 15-19, she was very disappointed with God, but her heart longed for Him too.
When she was 19, she was an English major at the University. She wanted to practice speaking English and there were foreign volunteers she had contact with who were Christians. She still didn’t want anything to do with Jesus, but she wanted to go to their English camps. During this time, she saw the Jesus film and heard a testimony from a Thai pastor. She sensed then that if she didn’t receive Jesus now, she would never do it. She received Jesus, but she kept it a secret for a year.
After some time, Silk found out that one of her younger brothers was ALSO a secret believer! They were both so happy when they found this out. They both told their Dad together that they were Christians. Now that they were both adults, he really couldn’t do anything, but he did say that he would not allow any more than the 2 of them to be Christians in the family. Silk ended up with a great job and her Dad was very proud of her. After a few years, Silk was feeling called to ministry, but her parents didn’t want her to leave her good paying job. Finally her parents did give her “permission” to leave the business world and go into fulltime ministry. She worked at a church in Bangkok for 7 years until she sensed God leading her in a new direction and into a new ministry. At one point, Silk went to America and studied for a year and interned at the BICWM offices and eventually came to be part of the Thai team here! Over time, Silk’s family members have become believers—not all of them, though – her mom and 3 younger siblings. Please pray that her Dad, her older brother and sister would come to have a relationship with Jesus.
I wanted to share this with you so you could pray for her and her family, but also to encourage you in your walk with God. Things are not always easy. God calls us to persevere! He is always with us!
What a touching testimony. Amazing blessings, Vick!
